Ours began around our family table.
For more than 20 years, I have served as an Emergency Room registered nurse, caring for people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. My husband has spent more than two decades serving our community as a police officer. Together, our careers have always been centered on helping others, but it was our own family that ultimately changed the course of our lives.
When my father became seriously ill, my husband and I made the decision to move both of my parents into our home. Like so many families, we wanted to surround them with love, familiarity, and the comfort of being together.
Almost overnight, our home became more than a place to live it became a place of healing.
As we balanced demanding careers and raising our four children, caring for my father quickly became a family affair. Each of us played a role in supporting him, while also caring for my mother as she experienced the heartbreak of watching her husband decline. We came to understand that caring for an aging loved one extends far beyond medical needs. It requires patience, compassion, dignity, emotional support, and a home filled with love.
Through this experience, we witnessed firsthand the challenges that countless families face every day. We lived the long days, the sleepless nights, the difficult decisions, and the constant desire to provide the very best care while trying to balance work, family, and life's many responsibilities.
Thankfully, my father's health improved, allowing both of my parents to return to the comfort and independence of their own home. While we celebrated his recovery, something profound remained with us.
We had discovered what compassionate care in a home setting could truly look like.
We learned that healing is nurtured through meaningful relationships. That dignity is found in the smallest daily moments. That every individual deserves to feel valued, respected, safe, and truly at home.
Those lessons became the foundation of North Star Residential Care.
